Your pre-departure checklist for a safe, confident, and seamless journey to Thailand.

Travel Documents & Visa

Confirm your passport and entry requirements before you book or board.

  • Check that your passport has at least 6 months’ validity remaining from your planned arrival date.
  • Verify whether you need a visa for your nationality. Start with the official Thai e-Visa website — do not rely on unofficial third-party sites.
  • Save digital and paper copies of your passport bio page and any visa approval separately from the original.
  • Confirm your return or onward ticket and accommodation details — immigration may ask for them on arrival.

Essential Apps

Install these before you land so you can get around and communicate immediately.

  • LINE — Thailand’s everyday messaging app for shops, hotels, and local contacts.
  • Grab — rides, food delivery, and package services in most tourist cities.
  • Bolt — a useful alternative for rides when Grab is busy or pricier.
  • Google Translate — offline Thai pack recommended for menus, signs, and quick conversations.

Download and set them up on Wi‑Fi at home so you are not stuck without data at the airport.

Money & Payments

A little cash plus a travel-friendly card covers almost every day-one situation.

  • Bring some Thai Baht (THB) cash for street food, markets, taxis that prefer cash, and small vendors.
  • Do not assume tourist QR / PromptPay will work with your foreign bank app — many local QR payments are for Thai accounts only.
  • Use a travel card or multi-currency card with low FX fees for hotels, malls, and larger restaurants.
  • ATMs are widely available; notify your bank before travel and expect a flat withdrawal fee at many machines.

Health & Safety

Arrange cover before departure and save the numbers you may need in Thailand.

  • Secure travel insurance that covers medical care and emergency evacuation before you fly.
  • Tourist Police: 1155 — English-friendly help for tourists.
  • Medical Emergency: 1669 — ambulance / medical response.
  • Police: 191 — general emergency police line.

Save these numbers in your phone contacts before arrival, and keep your insurance policy number handy offline.

Packing for the Climate

Dress for heat and humidity — and for temple etiquette when you visit sacred sites.

  • Pack light, breathable fabrics (linen, cotton, moisture-wicking) for tropical weather.
  • Bring a light rain layer in rainy season and comfortable walking shoes you can slip off at temples.
  • For temple visits: cover shoulders and knees — carry a light scarf, shawl, or long pants you can put on quickly.
  • A compact umbrella, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle make hot days much easier.

Getting into the City

From Suvarnabhumi Airport, rail is often the simplest way into central Bangkok.

  • Take the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi toward the city.
  • Ride to Phaya Thai station to connect with the BTS Skytrain.
  • From the BTS you can reach many major hotels, malls, and neighborhoods without fighting airport road traffic.
  • Buy a Rabbit card or single-journey tickets at the station once you connect to BTS — keep small cash or a card ready.

If you arrive late, with heavy luggage, or outside Bangkok, a licensed airport taxi or pre-booked transfer can still be the better option.
